 Tips...

Even the most enjoyable experiences can be pretty stressful, particularly the first time we try them.   And of course most of us don’t like being the “new kid on the block.”  So here’s a brief “peek” into a typical massage session designed to calm some of those first-time jitters.

The intake Interview

If this is your first massage ever or just your first massage with me, please arrive 15-20 minutes early to complete the necessary paperwork.
You will be asked to fill out a brief form before your session documenting your current state of health and giving your informed consent to receive massage therapy.

You will have a brief interview before your massage to discuss your goals for the session, any conditions that may affect your massage and specific areas of your body that you want (or don’t want) included in your session.
Let the therapist know if you are allergic to any oils or lotions, there are many substitutes available.  I use a bio tone gel, skin-friendly hypoallergenic product and it feels silky smooth on your skin.

The Massage Session

Take off only as much clothing as you are comfortable removing.  Only that part of your body which is being massaged will be uncovered.
Despite what you may have heard, massage isn’t supposed to hurt.  The best results are obtained when the pressure is well within your comfort zone.  If you feel any discomfort, please let me know.

Remember, this is your time to relax. If anything would help you be more comfortable, please ask the me.

You can talk during your massage or stay quiet, as you choose. I will follow your lead.

Spend a few minutes afterwards integrating your massage experience. If you feel dizzy or light-headed, do not get off the table too quickly or ask for assistance.

If you wish, I can offer therapeutic suggestions such as stretching exercises or other bodywork options and also design a care plan for you at the end of your session.

Whether this is your very first massage or you are a seasoned “veteran,” these tips will help you get the most benefit from your session.

Before your session

- Arrive on time for your massage.  If you’re frenzied and rushed, it may take you longer to relax.

- Please turn off your cell phone, pager and PDA.

- Drink some water beforehand but don’t eat a big meal for at least a couple of hours.

- Use the restroom just before your massage.

- Avoid using nicotine, alcohol, recreational drugs or caffeine containing substances for at least several hours before and after your session.

- A hot shower, sauna, whirlpool or hot tub beforehand (and afterwards) helps you relax even more.

During your massage

- Relax your body and your mind; give in to the experience and let yourself go.

- Deep, slow breathing using your abdomen can be a wonderful enhancement.

- Focus on your breathing and the sensation of the therapist’s hands during the massage.

- Let the therapist know about any specific areas that need extra attention or, on the other hand, that you prefer not be included in your session.

- You don’t need to “help” the therapist by lifting your arms, legs or head unless asked.

- If you’re uncomfortable with anything during your session the pressure, the pace, the music, the room temperature ask for an adjustment.
-If you have any questions during the session, please ask.

After your Massage

- Take some time to let the experience sink in.

- Drink plenty of water and have a light snack.

- Try not to do strenuous work or exercise for a few hours     afterwards.
